Carry Me Back To Old Virginny

Dies ist ein Song aus der Reihe der Minstrel-Shows: Eine im 19. Jahrhundert populäre Form der Unterhaltungsmusik. Weiße Musiker färbten ihre Gesichter schwarz, um das (vermeintliche) Leben der Afroamerikaner auf den großen Plantagen darzustellen. Die Musik basierte auf den Fiddletunes der angelsächsischen Einwanderer. Später spielten auch afroamerikanische Musiker in den Minstrels, auch sie mussten ihre Gesichter schwarz färben um die rassistischen Auftrittsverbote zu umgehen.

Die Minstrel-Songs wurden auch als Plantation-Melodies geführt, da sie das Leben der „immer fröhlichen” Afroamerikaner auf den Plantagen des Südens der USA schilderten.
